THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EASTER EGGS

The tradition of decorated eggs began with the people in the Indo-European races, who lived before the time of Christ. To them, it was a startling event to see a new and live creature emerge from a seemingly dead object. Thus, the egg became a symbol of spring’s new beginnings.

Then, after Jesus Christ had been crucified, buried, and resurrected, the egg took on religious symbolism—the rock tomb out of which Christ emerged to the new life of His Resurrection. Because of this interpretation, the egg was one of the forbidden foods during Lent, so people painted the eggs in bright colors of spring, had them blessed, and gave them to friends as Easter gifts. Easter eggs became a symbol honouring the new life of Jesus Christ, and because of their strong Christian beginning, they are a part of the Easter tradition that continues today.
