Introduction 

The bible contains beautiful imagery just as those in books such as the 'Lord of the Rings'.  Some examples: 

Smeagol to Gollum 

Smeagol was 'consumed' by the ring.  This resulted in a degeneration of his whole person/personality. 

Compare Ahab (1 Kings 18:16-18) 

Sauron/Mordor threatened to over-run the middle earth 

The trees and the dead fought against Mordor!

Compare Elisha (2 Kings 6:15-17)

Gandalf, Aragon . . . challenged Mordor 

They were surrounded.  It appeared to be a hopeless situation.  From whose perspective are we looking at the situation?

Compare 'wisdom and foolishness' in 1 Cor 1:18-25 and 'dragon' in Rev 12.

Why do we talk? 

1.     Fellowship/Communication

Two persons in love always talk, e.g. teenagers 

2.     Instruction/Teaching 

3.     Contract/Promise

1.     Revelation of God himself, i.e. fellowship

2.     Laws/Commands, i.e. instruction

3.     Promise - when human beings fail

1.    Revelation of himself 

   In Creation

o      “Let there be light” as contrast to 1:26ff

o      Fellowship, even in sin, Gen 3:9,

  Bible record, especially in the OT 

  Christ

o      The Word became flesh and dwell among us, John 1:1-18     

        2.   Laws/Command

              Deut 30:15 – Boundary of a loving Father that we may be truly human 

  “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

                        Psalm 119:105 – absolute trust 

        3.   Promise 

  Prodigal son, Luke 15

  Exod 2:23-25

  Hosea 11

Application 

Know your God 

Know His laws – holiness 

Know His love 

Then you will want to find time with Him and read his words in the Scriptures.
