Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Passion Week. This is the Sunday before Easter when we commemorate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, symbolically taking His position as King (see Zechariah 9:9).

This was the week of the Passover and the city of Jerusalem was packed with pilgrims. Jesus left the town of Bethany and travelled about 3km northwards through the village of Bethphage and up the Mount of Olives where He could see the entire city of Jerusalem. From there he continued westward through the Kildron Valley and finally into the city of Jerusalem, mounted on a donkey and welcomed by the crowds who sang praises to Him and laid their cloaks on the road.

This was the start of a momentous week, demonstrating the passion of Christ for his people. In the course of this week, the excitement of the people would be challenged with fear, anger and then pain as Christ was arrested, tried and then nailed to the cross. And finally, the sorrow was to be broken with a new joy as with the Resurrection of Christ!
